I recently read a sneak peek of the upcoming novel Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins and it is so cute! I really want to read the rest. Perkins is known for her novels Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door. I haven’t read either of these but after reading this excerpt they are all on my tbr list!
Isla, high on pain killers, steps into a cafe near her home in Manhattan in search of some soft food after having her wisdom teeth out. Who should she run into but Josh, the cool kid at school who she’s had a crush on forever! They sit together and talk. He was people watching and sketching before she arrived. She has always wanted a peek at his sketch book. They talk, and it becomes clear that Isla isn’t 100% in her usual state – the after effects of the painkillers – and she is bold enough to suggest that he sketch her. He seems taken a back, maybe as if he’s wanted to sketch her before. He jumps at the opportunity and while he draws she actually falls asleep (again, the drugs from her surgery). Later, when she is home she realizes not only has she just spent an evening with Josh, he must have paid for her food and walked her home! This information is digested in conversation with her best friend Kurt. The three of them all go to school together, but not in Manhattan – in Paris!
The story picks up again when Isla returns to school. Will that night with Josh be her ‘in’ with him? Is this her chance? And will she ever see the sketch he drew of her? Will she be drooling in the sketch, slumped unconscious? And how will she deal with her little sister starting at her school.
This is a real high school chick-lit story. I loved the writing and the feel of the story. Not too serious, not too silly. I read the spoiler in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. Fully recommend it and can’t wait to read the rest. Perfect if you want a light read. Full review will come once I have read the whole thing!
Due for release 14th of August – not long to wait now!
